Asif Illyas is an amazingly talented and prolific songwriter, composer, and guitar player who is probably best known for his work as front man for the Canadian pop/rock band MIR.
Of MIR, the press says: “One of the most innovative and
melodic new groups to come out of Canada, Mir’s unique challenging,
easily identifiable sound makes them stand out clearly against all
other pop/rock group…Mir creates an exciting new definition of the
term “pop music”. They bring charm, wit and reflection into the pop
genre; characteristics that were seemingly swept away with the tide
in the early 90’s…Mir has toured extensively overseas, and their
smooth blend of electronica, pop, and world flavors has landed them
on stages and recordings as diverse as OzFest to sharing space on
European CD compilations with Sting, Leonard Cohen and Joni
Mitchell… Amazingly, (like all great songwriters I guess…), Asif also finds time to pursue some solo work. The quality of his work was recently recognized internationally when one of his songs (U Dream) was picked as one of the Top Three winners in the 2008 international John Lennon Songwriting competition! I recently asked Asif what he liked the most about his Laplante "Galadriel". His reply was kinda short , but to the point: “tone, JP, tone…”.Asif indeed used her on all tracks of their latest CD OK2GO.
